Not sure if this was a bug, or something I was doing wrong that the game never clearly explained to me. I remember always having water pressure problems no matter how many water towers or pumps I created. You can get a snappy jazz number during a hurricane, or a dirge right after celebrating a milestone. Instead of having the music fit the tone of the game, it plays entirely at random.Like most Maxis games, it came with a very thorough manual. The pre-made maps included several real-life cities including one only a half hour from where I grew up: Flint, Michigan. The first installment in the highly acclaimed SimCity franchise by Maxis Will Wright.

Personally I prefer the look of the old DOS UI above the Windows ones but that's probably nostalgia speaking.

  • Most of Sue Kasper's music is very enjoyable. I guess technically speaking SimCity 2000 Network Edition is the best since you can play it at any resolution, even wide screen, and in multiplayer of course.
  • The layout, interface, and graphics are all fantastic.
  • There are dozens of units to build, several systems to manage, and all sorts of interesting things that can occur.
  • There is a surprisingly large amount of things to do in the game.
  • I own the special edition of this game for DOS.

However, with the many new features, it stayed interesting for a lot longer than the original. SimCity 2000 Maxis, 1993 Play now Bookmark Download SimCity 2000 is a Playable Demo Simulation game published by Maxis in 1993. However, like most Sim games, I got bored with the game before too long because there is no objective. And, of course, it was always fun to send the space alien to destroy everything. I really liked all the additions of SimCity 2000: the isometric view, sloping land, the water system, the slow invention of technologies, and the nice music. I bought SimAnt, and A-Train, they bought 2000 and the original, and my friend Jeremy bought SimFarm and SimTower. After I had bought SimCity on the SNES, we got into a Sim game kick, and began buying a lot of them. SimCity 2000, created by Will Wright and Fred Haslam, is an open-ended city-building simulation video game. but this one is just a very well-done curio.I first played SimCity 2000 at my cousin's house. Future SC entries improve on this, and are worthy as game and social experiment. The fun in this version of SC is akin to the fun one gets with a paint program, not necessarily a game program.

There are ways to find that version, and then it just needs a patch so it doesnt crash when you go to save or load the game. It just maximizes to the size of your screen. In retrospect, the game is a lot like Balance of Power: the ideas are awe-inspiring, and the execution creative, but the game itself leaves a bit to be desired. I use the windows 95 version of Simcity 2000.

The Bottom Line:It started and defined a genre that no other series has ever been able to touch- city planning games. This patch by MrRong on reddit fixes issues running the SimCity 2000 Network Edition on modern versions of Windows. The good news is that theres a much smaller learning curve when moving from SC2000 than there was from SimCity to SimCity 2000. The use of windows in this game, while allowing more flexibility than the DOS version, can get unwieldy. The pre-planned scenarios aren't very fun- once a grasp of the basic concepts of the game are in hand, demolishing buildings to build police stations in hot spots or bulldozing districts to stop the spread of fire just feel like boring puzzle games. Granted, Will Wright could mold the game in any fashion that he desired, but SimCity seems a weird place to trumpet one's own ideological utopian vision. Some have said that to "win" you must lay out your city for mass public transit (with no roads) which strikes me as a lopsided statistical modelling job.

There is little to do once you find that happy middle ground of taxes and spending- wait for enough funds, tweak your city a bit, wait for some more funds. The Bad:While the experience of playing SimCity is fun, the overall game is rather pointless. Build cities "organically" like London, or build your city according to a larger over-all plan, like Washington DC. Building a city from scratch is fun, and allows a person to experience the joys of being a ruler. The gameplay is familiar, system specs need not be powerful (unlike for the newer Sim installments), and gameplay is a bit smoother than on the standard DOS version. The review on MobyGames says it all"The Good:The original SimCity is a classic, and this is but a translation of it to the Windows environment. One of the rarest versions of Maxis' genre-defining SimCity series, Simcity Classic is a good Windows 3.1 version of the original game, ported by Azeroth.
